PIONEER TIMES INNOVATION AWARDS
The Log Cabin Heritage Foundation, a support group for Log Cabin Village,
is proud to offer the Pioneer Times Innovation Awards, an annual contest
for 4th graders. Additional sponsorship of this contest is provided by an anonymous foundation.
***Please note: Continuation of the contest annually is dependent on
availability of funds.
Each 4th grade class who tours the Village each calendar
year is eligible to enter. The entries need to be turned in by January
31 each year in order to be judged. Two student entries from each
class will be chosen to receive first place and first runner up prizes
($100 and $50 U.S. Savings Bonds, respectively). All entries are eligible
to be published in the Log Cabin Village blog.
A ceremony will be held
each spring to present the winning entries from the previous year with
their bonds. From all of these entries, a Grand Prize winner will be
chosen to receive an additional savings bond!
Pioneer Times Innovation Awards Entry Form
Contest Topics and Rules
- To enter, students may choose from ONE of the following:
- Students may design their own dream log cabin. This cabin
can be as creative and contain as many amenities (historical,
not modern – No GameCubes or Satellite dishes!) as the student
desires. As the students imagine their dream cabin, have them
consider what might make their lives easier or be useful in their
small home based on their experience in Log Cabin Village.
- Based on what they learned about frontier living during their
visit to Log Cabin Village, students may create an invention
that would have made life easier in the 19th century. This invention
does not need to be completely grounded in reality; the more
fanciful the better (i.e. an automatic chalk-picker-upper for
the school)! While it is okay for students’ inventions to be
something that actually exists, the design MAY NOT exactly duplicate
modern devices (i.e. drawing a Maytag washing machine). The design
needs to be original!
Entries MUST be submitted on the provided forms. The students should
draw their entry (cabin or invention) on one page of the form and creatively
describe their entry in essay format on the other form. Students may
use any media (i.e. paint, markers, chalk, etc.) to complete their
drawings.
- The entry form cover sheet provided MUST be used for each class.
- Although each entry should be inspired by the student’s visit to
Log Cabin Village, creativity and imagination are strongly encouraged
and recommended!
- The minimum number of entries for each class is 8 students.
- It is recommended that teachers submit ALL entries for judges’ consideration
rather than submitting a select few.
