MEET THE PIONEERS
Meet the Pioneers is a great program for all ages. Participants are
divided into groups and then travel from cabin to cabin visiting with
our historical interpreters dressed in period attire. The interpreters
discuss 19th century Texas frontier history, demonstrate various crafts
from the time period, and engage visitors in a conversation about the
past. Reproduction items that can be touched are available at each tour
stop. Demonstrations available vary, but may include weaving, candle-dipping,
blacksmithing, and milling.
Please note: Any 4th grade class who tours the Village is eligible to enter our Pioneer Times Innovation Awards contest.

PIONEER SCHOOL
Pioneer
School is an adventure that gives your group the chance
to experience an 1880s school day. The morning is devoted to learning
lessons using slates and a curriculum that we provide (see link below).
After your lunch in an adjacent park, your group will return to the
Village to complete our Meet the Pioneers Tour 1 program
(included in the Pioneer
School fee)! Students
and teachers are given sample clothing and lunch suggestions in the
curriculum.
Please note: although we provide the curriculum, we do
not supply the teacher. Please make sure that one of your sponsors
is comfortable leading the school day.
Please note: Any 4th grade class who tours the Village is eligible to enter our Pioneer Times Innovation Awards contest.

WAGONS WEST
Wagons West allows participants to be a nineteenth century Texan! This
half-day program of hands-on activities recreates elements of a typical
child's day. The children wash clothes using a washboard and lye soap,
card wool, complete chores in the Seela hands-on cabin, grind corn by
hand, and weave on a child's scale loom. When the school bell rings,
they head for the one room schoolhouse to read and recite 1800s style
lessons, and cipher on slates. Also includes a craft and snack.
Please note: Any 4th grade class who tours the Village is eligible to enter our Pioneer Times Innovation Awards contest.
