The Power of Names
In this label, we talk about the life of Cynthia Ann Parker. Which is great if we only focused on her life before 1836, before her capture at age eight. But a lot of this sign centers around her life with the Nʉmʉnʉʉ (Comanche) and after her re-capture by the Texas Rangers in 1860. During that time (the majority of her life), she would have responded to the name Narua. Her Nʉmʉnʉʉ family, friends, and husband would have called her Narua. When her son, Quanah Parker searched for her following her re-capture, he would have asked other Nʉmʉnʉʉ people if they had seen or heard news of Narua.
In future signs, we will honor this woman’s lived experience by referring to her as Narua (born Cynthia Ann Parker) to acknowledge the fullness of her story.

En esta publicación hablamos de la vida de Cynthia Ann Parker. Lo cual está muy bien si sólo nos centramos en su vida antes de 1836, antes de su captura a los ocho años. Pero gran parte de este cartel se centra en su vida con los Nʉmʉnʉʉ (Comanches) y después de su nueva captura por los Rangers de Texas en 1860. Durante ese tiempo (la mayor parte de su vida), habría respondido al nombre de Narua. Su familia Nʉmʉnʉʉ, sus amigos y su marido la habrían llamado Narua. Cuando su hijo, Quanah Parker, la buscó tras su recaptura, habría preguntado a otros Nʉmʉnʉʉ si habían visto u oído noticias de Narua.
En futuros carteles, honraremos la experiencia vivida por esta mujer refiriéndonos a ella como Narua (nacida Cynthia Ann Parker) para reconocer la plenitud de su historia.
